Four Ways To Get Ready For Public Speaking
February 22, 2012
Which is more to your liking, public speaking or gargling with drain cleaner? It’s no shocker that many would rather gargle Drano than speak in front of a crowd.
Public Speaking has been ranked as the “number one fear” among thousands of us. The anxiety is overwhelming, you start to sweat profusely, your knees are knocking so hard you might break a kneecap, hands tremble like you dipped them in a fryer full of hot oil, voice starts quivering like someone dumped a bucket of ice water on your head and you can’t remember what it is you are supposed to be talking about. Why do you think that happens? Because you are scared to death.
Here are some tips that could help you triumph over public speaking.
Picture yourself doing it. Imagine that you are telling a crowd of people something. Picture yourself from start to finish. Start with walking towards the mike, through your speech, and up to the victorious ending.
You should practice all the time. Rehearse your speech endless times. Now, do the same thing to a real live person (just make sure they will be honest with you about your presentation). It’s been said: “Repetition is the mother of all skill”. This is true, and you do it with the other things in your life, too. You can just about overcome any fear you have by doing it over and over again. Sports are a good example. These professional athletes never miss a shot. This is more because of endless practice rather than some inborn skill. This applies to public speaking, too.
Try taping yourself giving your presentation. This is a good way to see and hear how you will appear and sound to an audience.
Don’t panic. Just before you give your speech, RELAX. Take several slow deep breaths and recall that the audience is here to listen to your presentation. Your personal life isn’t going to be under the lights. They aren’t interested in your personal life.
Self-confidence will come to you if you are very well-prepared. At the end of your presentation, you won’t ever look at a can of Drano the same way.
